Although, as an SEO I often feel frustrated by Google’s actions, I’ve still considered it my preferred search engine for years. That is changing. Based on the quality seen recently, Google should be penalized.
Domain crowding is a real issue. Since Horde, an update launched last April, we have lost a diversity of domains, not gained more. Of course, I don’t mind one of our clients virtually monopolizing search results, but if I am using Google to find something I don’t want to see the same domains repeated over and over and over. Do you?
Although Google also mentioned scaling back on favoring exact match domains, we see the opposite in results. I’ve noticed more crap pages in search results this year than any time I can remember. The quality of results from the world’s top search engine is simply not what it should be.
Perhaps Google is so focused on pushing G+ that it lost sight of what made it a powerful, multi-billion dollar company. Or maybe the engineers are really doing their best to improve search results and are trying new things that just don’t work. Whatever it is, searchers are suffering for it.
I cannot turn my back on the search giant when providing SEO services. Google sends too much traffic to ignore. But although it may be difficult to break the habit of googling, it’s time to change my default.
